roams the woods, maybe in astrange place, as I once did, with his gununder his arm, for a shot at some stray rab-bit, he is overtaken hj the shades of night ina lonely place, and with the only alternativeto roam the woods all night or build a fireand roast a rabbit for supper, and then aftera smoke for a night cap, can roll himself inhis ulster, and lie down by the side of the 116 LAKE, FIELD AND FOREST. fire, and comfortably covered, can watch thefirelight and think over the captures of theday, and finally drop to sleep as peacefullyas a child in its mothers arms, to dream ofloved ones far away, secure in the thoughtthat there is nothing there to harm him, ashe lies in the midst of Dame Natures works.And why not? After all, life is but aspan, and nothing serious can befall us, andit be our fate to there end our mortal days,where can we find a more glorious mausoleum,than the undying clifts, or a more peacefullullaby than the song of the winds in thesoughing pines. There were only five words on the slip en-closed, *Come up to-night, sure. Signed^,*Henry. The boy was dismissed, no reply wasneeded, but what did it mean? And I won-dered the rest of the day. And I wonderedtill I went to see what it meant. My friend Doctor Henry was seated in hiseasy chair, when I entered, and was calmlyreading his evening paper, and oblivious toany undue excitement, that would suggestany cause for the telegram. *Whats the row, Doc, that you telegraphme to come up ?
