a largenumber had passed through. Now there were only twelve in Kitsparty, and they were poorly equipped forbattle. Still they pushed on, and at last camein sight of the Indian camp. It was just at sunset, and the Indianswere getting ready for the night. Therewere certainly a full hundred of them ; stillKit believed he could surprise them. Stretching themselves in the grass, theywatched the camp until darkness fell. Thenthey waited till midnight. FREMONT AND CARSON. 129 At midnight they crept down close to the camp. Then with a dash they burstupon them. They tore open the wigwamsand shot straight in upon the savages. Theywhooped and yelled! They ran round andround, firing every second. Then they hurried to the corral wherethe horses were tethered. Each man mountedone and led another. All the rest werestampeded, so that the Indians would haveno means of pursuit. And so, before the Indians had time tocollect their wits, the trappers were gone, andthey were left helpless in their wigwams.

CROSSING THE PLAINS. KIT CARSON AS FREMONTS GUIDE. This was the kind of life Kit Carson ledfor years. He wandered up and down thecountry, through the Rockies, across the plains,till he knew every trail and every pass. People began to call him the Monarchof the Plains. And so when General Fremont startedout, he sent for Carson and asked him toguide them. The little party set out from St. Louis.Reaching the Kan river, they left their boats,and struck out across the Kansas prairies to the Platte. For a few days the journey was peace-ful. Too peaceful, Carson thought, for noth- 131 132 FREMONT AND CARSON. ing happened. There was no danger, for noIndians appeared. But just as the party passed Fort Lar-amie, a herd of buffalo appeared upon theprairie, and the explorers gave chase. This was all new and w^onderful toGeneral Fremonts men, and General Fremontwrote it all out in the journal he was to carryback to the government.
