HE southern part of Arabiawas once called Sheba.1 Thepeople of Sheba were power-ful and wealthy, and they con-trolled the sea and caravantraffic in gold, spices, ivory,ebony and finely wovenThey worshiped the sun and ifr stuffs. the moon. 3^ The sovereign of this people was a beautifuland wise queen. She heard of the fame of Solo-mon and prepared to visit him in order to prove hiswisdom with hard questions. She came to Jerusalemwith a very great train, with camels that bore spices,and very much gold and precious stones. These shebrought as gifts to him according to custom, and toshow him something of the splendor of her realm. When she saw him she communed with him of allthat was in her heart. Very hard questions she askedhim and a great number of them, but Solomon an-swered every one with great wisdom. When thequeen of Sheba had seen all Solomons wisdom andthe house that he had built, and the meat of his table,and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of 1 Sheba == sheba.
