Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stopham Bridge. It's extraordinary to consider that up until 1986, and the opening of 1502077, this bridge carried the main A283 road over the River Arun. It was however one of the very first old mediaeval bridges to be reduced to one-way working controlled by traffic lights. These were introduced in 1936, and the diamond shaped grooves in the asphalt surface of the bridge may be part of the old traffic sensing system for the lights. Today no motor traffic can use the bridge as it has bollards at the ends. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, dating from 1442 and is managed by West Sussex County Council.
