Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stop lock, Marple At the entrance to the Macclesfield Canal. When there were two separate canal companies, it was important for each to prevent the transfer to the other of their most precious asset - water. The stop lock originally had two sets of gates. Which set was used would depend on the relative water levels of the two canals. The boat is the former Thomas Clayton (Oldbury) Ltd oil tanker 'Spey', a wooden boat dating from 1937.
