The creation of the 88 prayer stations along the 100 meter hilltop dates to the 1830s when several years of famine and unseasonable cool, cloudy weeks resulted in thousands of deaths around the valley near today's Echizen city. It emulates the famous full-scale prayer circuit around the island of Shikoku.
