Summary
[edit]DescriptionStone Chair milestone, Brighouse and Denholme Gate Road, Shelf - geograph.org.uk - 613840.jpg |
English: Stone Chair milestone, Brighouse and Denholme Gate Road, Shelf. This is an unusual one in having the two faces on separate slabs of stone set at approximately right-angles, with a stone seat in between. It was first erected in 1737, when the coaching routes were being established but before the roads were improved by the turnpike trusts. The other face gives directions to Bradford and Halifax, and West Street would have been part of the main road between those towns in the 18C. By 1891, when the milestones were re-erected, the present main road had been constructed. The surrounding area has been named after this stone chair. |
