Summary

[edit]
Description

Iron, in the form of ferrous sulfate administered orally, is used to treat iron deficiency anemia. Iron crystals may be deposited in the lamina propria and epithelium and may produce iron pill gastritis. This condition is characterized by any or a combination of the following: mucosal inflammation, small erosions, ulcers. A liquid form of iron supplement is much less toxic to the gastric mucosa than solid iron tablets. These images show iron crystals in the lamina propria, highlighted by Prussian Blue, and mild mucosal inflammation.
