[edit]DescriptionStirling LK488's impact point near 'Boot of Mickle Fell.' - geograph.org.uk - 1138231.jpg |
English: Stirling LK488's impact point near 'Boot of Mickle Fell.' Stirling Bomber LK488 crashed on Mickle Fell at 01:00 hrs on 19th October 1944, after colliding with the south side of the summit ridge and cartwheeling over it. This monochrome July 1977 photo looking east, shows its impact point on the south side of the hill before coming to rest 220m NNW on the north side. It was flying right to left across this scene. Miraculously, the tail gunner (W/O Alan G. Small RNZAF) survived. The aircraft was lifted off Mickle Fell using RAF Puma Helicopters on 1st September 1977 in the hope that it can one day be rebuilt for display. In the background, the eastern part of Mickle Fell's 3km-long summit ridge can be seen curving to the right in the direction of the trig-point 2km distant. At left midground is the Mickle Fell ruin which has deteriorated noticeably since the date of the photo. Taken on 12th July 1977 - G4YSS. |
