Summary
[edit]DescriptionStipagrostis prugens.jpg |
English: Stipagrostis prugens grows mainly in the sand, here in a riverbed at the foot of the Erg Tinya, west of the Oued Samene. The grass is adapted to dry conditions in that the leaves are rolled up and the stem ends in a hard, needle-sharp thorn. Biochemical processes allow the plant to only have to open the water-evaporating gaps half as much for photosynthesis as it would without these processes. This means it can survive with less water. The plant grows roots over a radius of more than 20 m. These are close to the surface and absorb moisture particularly well. The plant can survive for 4 to 5 years without rainfall.
