This is the first production L-5, built for the US Army with the US military serial 42-14798. She is fitted with the hook mechanism for the Brodie Landing System, which was used to operate light aircraft in locations with no useable runway, such as in jungles or from merchant ships. The hook would engage with a sling attached to a cable. The L-5 was the only aircraft to use this system in action, although this particular aircraft may have been used only for trials. She was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute from the USAF in 1960 and is seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
