Summary
[edit]DescriptionStinking Passionflower (Passiflora foetida) (7586780680).jpg |
A pretty good sized plant of this non-native Passiflora that I found snaking it's way through the scrub. It had about 7 blossoms, all of which were gone one week later. The 20mm fruit (red on this specimen) are edible. Young leaves are edible and are dried and used as a tea in Vietnam folk medicine that promotes sleep. Introduced into Florida, this species is actually native to the southwestern U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean and Central/South America. The name refers to the odor of the crushed leaves (I don't crush leaves so the plant smelled just fine to me :) Juno Dunes Natural Area (south). |
