English: Sault Ste. Marie Canal
Still at the Heart of Algoma Country Canal de Sault Ste. Marie Au cœur de la région d'Algoma Algoma Country has at its centre, the globally-strategic location where Lake Superior is joined by its watery umbilical cord to Lake Huron. People have gathered along the St. Marys River for 1000's of years because of its rich source of fish and because it was on the travel route to the far reaches of the world. Today, it is much the same. As commerce in this young country grew, there was a need on the Canadian side for a way to get ships up or down the 6.4 metre (21 feet) difference in lake levels. In 1895, the Sault Canal was completed and over its commercial career, it hosted thousands of vessel passages. Due to a wall failure in 1987, its lock was rebuilt for pleasure craft. Over the century the town grew to be a major city. Welcome to modern Sault Ste. Marie. Yet, here at Sault Canal National Historic Site you can still step back in time. Marie. |
