Summary

[edit]
Description

Part view of the "Green Yard." At this late date this are had changed consideably, largely to refuel any diesel locomotives that came on shed. Diesel fuel tanks can be seen, and a rather 'Heath Robinson' fuelling system and shed have been erected. The little diesel mechanical Drewry class 04 locomotive has doubtless been responsible for the freight wagons scattered all around the shed environs. "Green Yard" was once home to the sand furnace, the wheel drop house and the huge coaling plant, all of which have been removed. Beyond is the overbridge carrying the South London Line and beyond through the arches can be seen the Low Level Line running from Clapham Junction, Longhedge Junction and the West London Extension. Even at this late stage, steam engines would still be seen at this point during the night, as heavy coal trains hauled by LMR Black Fives and 8Fs would be worked across the low level bridge from Hendon and Brent to LMR coal depots located near Herne Hill on the Southern
