Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Stewartia pseudocamellia Maximowicz, 1867 - Japanese stewartia (Dawes Arboretum, Licking County, Ohio, USA)

The Japanese stewartia is native to parts of the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Korean and Japanese populations probably represent separate species or subspecies of Stewartia.

From exhibit signage:

JAPANESE STEWARTIA Stewartia pseudocamellia

This is a magnificent medium sized tree attaining 30 to 40 feet in height. Here are some of the best examples of stewartia in the United States.

Four-inch, white camellia-like flowers occur June - July. The fall color is striking orange to scarlet. But perhaps the best feature is the exquisite smooth bark of soft grays, browns, and creamy orange with a polished sheen.

An outstanding specimen plant, stewartia grows best in moist well-drained, acidic soil with protection from winter winds.

Classification: Plantae, Angiospermophyta, Ericales, Theaceae
