Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The remains of the Roman sanctuary n Steinsel were discovered in the mid-1950s. A walled cult area with a central temple and several outbuildings was uncovered. The temple was built in the late 1st century AD as a pilgrimage shrine on a hill above the Alzette valley, which was densely populated with Roman manors. The temple was likely dedicated to Cerunincus - a local Gallic deity about whom next to nothing is known. The god was represented by a 12 cm bronze figurine found at eh site. With the spread of Christianity and the devastation caused by the Germanic invasions in the early 5th century, the sanctuary was abandoned. The temple is located in the forest above Steinsel, an ancient town were a Roman settlement was located on the road linking Metz to Aix-la-Chapelle. Excavation in Steinsel at the Church Place revealed the foundations of a Roman villa with large thermal facilities as well as a burial dating from the Frankish era.
