Description
English:

On November 14, 1915, The S.S. MINNESOTA departed Seattle for Great Britain on her farewell voyage, to be placed into service there. However, the MINNESOTA's obsolete boilers gave out entirely, and off the coast of southern California, it became clear that she could not continue under her own power. She was assisted to San Francisco by numerous tugs, and all 16 boilers were replaced by the Union Iron Works at a cost of $400,000. She was sold to the Atlantic Transport Line in January 1917 and departed San Francisco for New York via the Panama Canal. She remained in trans-Atlantic service throughout World War I. (pg. 251) Notes from Gordon Newell, ed., The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest (Seattle: Superior Publishing Co, 1966).
