In 1899, the Blue Star Line, operating in conjunction with the British American Line of river steamers, had the ELIHU THOMSON and GARONNE on the St. Michael route, the GARONNE having been employed in offshore freighting and the ELIHU THOMSON in the Hawaiian sugar trade during the off season. The ELIHU THOMSON lost her propellor under the command of Capt. Whitney on April 20, 1899, while 400 miles from San Francisco with a cargo of sugar from Honolulu. In 1900, the vessel was sold to the Pacific Cold Storage Co., who outfitted it to carry 200 tons of refrigerated cargo in Puget Sound-Hawaii service. (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W.
