Description

This is the seismograph station record from the Norris Museum in Yellowstone, Wyoming. The "noise" about two-thirds of the way down on the graph (click on the image to zoom in) is a major eruption of Steamboat Geyser. It erupted starting at late 1:06 AM on Saturday, 16 February 2019.

Steamboat is the world's tallest geyser. Its eruptions are normally unpredictable - it can go years or even decades without erupting. Steamboat entered an exciting active phase in spring 2018. From fall to the end of 2018, Steamboat continued to erupt about once every 5 to 9 days. 2018 was the most active year ever. This is the 6th eruption of Steamboat Geyser in 2019. Intervals (= eruption start to eruption start) lengthened over part of the 2018-2019 wintertime. In January 2019, intervals were about 9 to 11.5 days. The three most recent intervals have been between 7 and 7.25 days.

Yellowstone's seismograph records are made available to the public in near-real time.
