Again,if an engine is only to be run occasionally, as in the case of a relayengine to a water wheel, the engine should not be as costly a oneas if it were to run more frequently. In the latter case, the intereston the increased cost of an economical engine over one usingmore fuel might be more than the difference in the fuel cost, owingto the short time that the engine is used. Generally speakingstriple-expansion engines for mill or electric work with steampressures as low as 150 pounds have not shown that the savingdue to their use is sufficient to pay for their increased cost overa compound engine. Engines used in the power plants of verylarge buildings, should, generally speaking, be of the compoundtype, if over 200 horse-power. They are naturally run non-condensing.
