rmined the cylinderdimensions, the rotative speed, steam pressure, and whether theengine is to be run condensing or non-condensing; hence thespecification should give: Diameter and stroke of cylinders;number of revolutions per minute; horse-power to be developedwhen working at highest efficiency; horse-power at maximumload; steam pressure; back pressure if run non-condensing, orvacuum if run condensing. As before stated, an engineer should not be too rigid in regardto cylinder dimensions, and it is well, particularly when purchas-ing high-speed or medium-speed engines, to state in the specifica-tions that engines with cylinder volumes equivalent to thosespecified will be considered. There are objections to an enginewith too short a stroke in proportion to the area of piston; thesewere stated in the preceding chapter.
