January 1 A.D. 18G3 The first contribution was made By Charlotte Scott, a freed woman of Virginia and consecrated By her suggestion and request On the day she heard of President Lincolns death To build a monument to his memory The entire cost of the statue, $18,000, wasraised by emancipated slaves. Congress thenauthorized its erection on public grounds byan Act of June 23, 1874, also appropriating$3,000 for the base and pedestal. This beautiful twelve-foot statue was de-signed by the great American sculptor,Thomas Ball. Mr. Ball studied art in Italyand was living in Florence when he createdhis Lincoln. The statue was cast in Munich.Lincoln is shown standing beside a pedestal,on which is the face of Washing-ton in relief, the lictors rodsand ax, and a shield. Themartyred President is holding theEmancipation Proclamation in hisright hand.
