The family story goes, Mrs.Miller said, that Aunt Char-lotte came into the diningroom during breakfast onemorning following Lincolnsassassination and said shewanted to contribute to amonument in his memory. Gen. Rucker gave her $5 fromher earnings which shepromptly sent to Washingtonwhere it became the firstdonation of the $18,000 givenfor the monument THE MONUMENT bysculptor Thomas Dall, showsLincoln with the Emancipa-tion Proclamation in his righthand and holding his lefthand over a colored citizen,who, having been released from the shackles of slavery,is kneeling at his feet. We feel proud of whatAunt Charlotte did, Mrs.Miller said, and we want tokeep alive the stories of herloyalty to the two men whofreed her—President Lincolnand Gen. Rucker. • Mrs. Miller is the grand-daughter of the late EdgarPark Rucker, son of Gen.Rucker and Governor-elect of West Virginia at the time ofhis death. Mrs. Barkley is thegranddaughter of another ofGen. Ruckers sons, James T.Rucker.•

Mil-ler (right), of 6360 31st pi. nw, took her children, from left,Shannon 10, and Adam 8, to Lincoln Park to tell them astory from history about Aunt Charlotte, their greatgrandfathers freed slave who made the first contributionfor the erection of the Emancipation Monument in LincolnPark. The memorial to President Lincoln was erected solelyfrom contributions from emancipated citizens and CharlotteScott, a freed woman from Virginia, gave the first $5 towardit.
