. They lose battles today, but theydont lose them in the same way thatwe lost, he said. Out there wasBull Run, when our troops broke andfled and ran in panic into the cityhere. Today, battles are lost, but theyare lost bravely, at least. The sun had set. Mr. Lincoln, inhis black clothes, was almost lostfrom my sight in the gloom. He waswalking, somewhere, ahead. Drank In Own Anger We had to kill our own brothers, drink in our own anger, bleed ourown land, burn our own crops, in thesure knowledge that every victory byarms was a step back from thr peaceof our people. ... Today, the fight is moie savage, but the battle lines are drawn. Atleast today, the Union I gave mystrength and my soul to win is here. Mr. Lincoln was gone. I returned tothe marble memorial. The electriclights were turned on, and new groupsof tourists were reading once morethe words on the wall. And Lincoln, somber and pensive and of very greatsize, sat on his pedestal there. A tourist said, Things were simplein his time.
