Statue impériale romaine exposée au Musée national de Carthage (Tunisie) Plaquette de description du musée : Faustine La Jeune, épouse de Marc Aurèle ou sa fille Lucille, épouse de Lucius Vérus. Moulage. L'original est au Musée du Louvre. Sortie de terre en 1845 lors des travaux préliminaires à la construction de la chapelle Saint Louis, à l'emplacement où fut ensuite identifiée la basilique judiciaire du Forum de Carthage, cette tête marmoréenne, réalisée entre 161 et 165 apr. J.-C., appartient à une statue acrolithe (dont seules les extrémités, tête, mains et pieds étaient en marbre). C'est l'une des pièces maîtresses de la sculpture de l'Afrique romaine. La présence d'une telle œuvre dans la basilique judiciaire de Carthage prouve que celle-ci était consacrée au couple impérial contemporain de la dédicace de l'édifice et confirme que l'ensemble du programme monumental du sommet de Byrsa actuellement restituable (voir maquette) a été réalisée dans le troisième quart du IIe s. de notre ère. Mention inscrite sur la base de la statue : Trouvé dans les ruines de Carthage, le 10 août 1847, et donné par S.A. le bey de Tunis à M. de Laporte, gérant du consulat général de France |
