Summary
[edit]DescriptionStatue of freedom fighter One-Tete Lohkay Sint Maarten Dutch Caribbean.jpg |
English: Statue of One-Tété Lohka by Nigeria-born St. Maarten sculptor Michael Maghiro. Lohka , a young woman born into slavery on a plantation on the Dutch side of the island of Sint Maarten. She was considered rebellious because she repeatedly tried to escape from her "owners." During one of Lohkay's attempts to escape, she was caught and taken back to the plantation. The plantation owners ordered one of her breasts cut off as punishment for her rebellion and as a signal to the other slaves. From then on she was known as “One-Tete Lohkay”. The statue was unveiled in 2006 and placed in the center of the Cay Hill roundabout. The statue depicts Lohkay running with a bundle of sugarcane on her right shoulder and a band around her chest, a representation of her resistance and strength. |
