Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Marble, Statue of a Roman, Roman. A marble statue of the 1st century AD with a replacement head of the 3rd century AD of a figure dressed in a sleeved tunic and toga. Near the left foot is a scrinium. The later head is a portrait of a middle-aged man turned to the right and inclining slightly towards the right shoulder with the gaze turned upward. The face has a beard and moustache and the expression is pleasant. The dexter arm is raised to waist level and holds a document in scroll form. The sinister arm is raised slightly higher and is outstretched. Probably bought by the 2nd Earl of Egremont between 1755 and 1763 or by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset and thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72), arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M. Treasury.
