Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A fine example of an early classical sphinx. The head is turned slightly to the side. The chthonic aspect of the creature is denoted through the disorderly rendering of the hair. Similarities with the statue of Apollo of Omphalos have induced scholars to attribute this work to the Boeotian sculptor Kalamis; most probably, a local work. Votive offering from the temple of Apollo. Circa 460 B.C. Inventory Number: 1383. Archaeological Museum of Aegina. Text: Museum inscription.
