Summary
[edit]DescriptionStatue of Priapus 1 or 2 c AD - 51353584779.jpg |
English: The corpse of the statue is made from Pentelic marble, and the head is made of marble from Carrara (antique Luni, Italy). The male statue is dressed in the oriental manner: Priapus wears a long tunic, attached to the waist by a belt, a sleeved shirt, and a sort of headdress with a flap on the neck and the ears. With both hands he holds the hem of her dress, in which there are wheat, grapes and other fruits, thus revealing her legs and her erect penis which serves as a support for her burden. Priapus, son of Dionysus and Aphrodite according to some ancient authors, was born in the Hellespont where, abandoned by his mother, he was taken in and raised by shepherds who venerated him as the divinity of fertility. Distributed from the Hellenistic period, its cult will extend throughout the Roman Empire. His cult was celebrated in the cities but also in the countryside, since it protects orchards and vineyards from misfortune. Gift of Walther Fol to the City of Geneva, 1871. The statue is now in the Musée d'art et d'histoire of Geneva (MAH). |
