PART ITHE BATTLE THE BATTLE CHAPTER I LEE CROSSES THE POTOMAC AFTER the battle of Chancellorsville, Hookerreorganized the Army of the Potomac. Thefollowing generals were assigned to the commandof the several corps of the army: to the First,Reynolds; to the Second, Hancock; to the Third,Sickles; to the Fifth, Meade; to the Sixth, Sedgwick;to the Eleventh, Howard; and to the Twelfth,Slocum. The Cavalry Corps was commanded byBrigadier-General George Stoneman, and consistedof three divisions under Pleasonton, Averill, andGregg, together with the Regular Reserve CavalryBrigade commanded by Buford. On May 22,1863, Stoneman was relieved from duty with theArmy of the Potomac, as also was Averill, andthe command of AveriUs division devolved onColonel Duffie of the First Rhode Island Cav-alry.
