| Description |
English: Statue of John Howard, St Paul's Square, Bedford. John Howard (1726-1790) was a philanthropist and one of the first prison reformers. Although born in London he spent most of his childhood in Cardington, just south of Bedford, and as an adult owned an estate there. After being appointed High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 1773, he inspected the county prison, and was shocked by what he saw. From then on he visited prisons throughout the country and campaigned for improvements to them. The Howard League for Penal Reform is named in his honour.
