Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Boncompagni Ludovisi Collection.

Coarse-grained marble.

The model by which this statue of Asclepius is inspired is well known from numerous specimens. In Rome there were many places of the cult of Asclepius and the most famous were on Tiber Island and on the Esquiline Hill. The figure holds a roll of paper and is leaning on a stick around which is wound a snake, symbol of the health gods. The sculpture is a Roman copy from the 2nd Century AD of an original Greek statue from the Hellenistic epoch.
