English: Boncompagni Ludovisi Collection.
Pentelic marble. This statue depicts a man in heroic nudity wearing only a cloak pinned over his right shoulder using a fibula and with his military attributes, a helmet and breastplate, resting on the support. The portrait head allows us to identify the subject as the emperor Antoninus Pius thanks to the comparisons with portraits on coins from the period AD 140-147. His oratorical pose, indicated by the gesture made with his left arm, is the result of restoration work by Ippolito Buzio, also responsible for the other repairs. This statue type is based on Greek prototypes of the 5th-4th Century BC, reworked in Rome to create portrait statues. of eminent men. |
