Text Appearing Before Image:
ain, and he begged tobe taken from its prison walls ; from its oppres-sive, stifling air; from its homelessness and itshopelessness. Gently, silently, the love of agreat people bore the pale sufferer to the longed-for healing of the sea, to live or to die, as God 332 STATESMEN should will, within sight of its heaving billows, within sound of its manifold voices. With wan, fevered face tenderly lifted to the cooling breeze,he looked out wistfully upon the oceans chang-ing waters ; on its fair sails whitening in themorning light; on its restless waves rolling shore-ward to break and die beneath the noonday sun;on the red clouds of evening arching low to thehorizon; on the serene and shining pathway ofthe stars. Let us think that his dying eyes reada mystic meaning which only the rapt and part-ing soul may know. Let us believe that in thesilence of the receding world he heard the greatwaves breaking on a further shore and felt al-ready upon his wasted brow the breath of theeternal morning.
Text Appearing After Image:
President Grover Cleveland. XII.GROVER CLEVELAND. We have now taken a brief survey of a goodlycompany of American statesmen with a view todetermine, so far as possible, their assignment topositions in the history of their country, and to dis-cover lessons in their careers for the incitement ofothers to persevere to attempts at achievement. These all have passed over to the silent major-ity, and the places which they will each occupywill be fixed as time rolls on. As inflexible as thelaws of life, as unsparing as death, is the verdictof posterity which will assign to each his ulti-mate station in the temple of fame. The processof determination began as soon as each manpassed over into the pale realms of shade. Theprocession is still moving onward. Grover Cleveland is nearest to us of theseworthies because he, the twelfth on the list, isstill in the land of the living. When the men ofthis time are removed beyond the confusion ofimmediate events, other generations will see thelost leaders
