The rage of the Southerners was great, andwas still further inflamed by later speeches onthe same subject during the debate over theproposition to throw Kansas and Nebraska opento a contest between slavery and freedom. Outof this great excitement came the assault ofPreston S. Brooks upon Senator Sumner. Inone of his speeches Sumner had referred to Sen-ator Butler, of South Carolina, with his usualcausticity and sarcasm ; but during the addresshe was not called to order for any part of it,either by the President or by any Senator, al-though he was closely watched to see if any per-sonality could justify a point of order to be raisedagainst him. The Rendition of Anthony Burns. CHARLES SUMNER 249 torted the praise of many who could not sym-pathize with his views. Preston S. Brooks was arepresentative from South Carolina, a son ofSenator Butlers cousin—a relationship hardlynear enough perhaps to call for his volunteer-ing to defend the South Carolina Senator who,among others, had been attacked. A day or twopassed after the delivery of the speech in whichButler was so vigorously criticised by Sumner,when. Brooks, watching his opportunity, stole in-to the Senate chamber where Sumner was busilywriting at his desk, the Senate not being then insession, and, raising a heavy cane, beat the Se*~ator with great force and rapidity over the head.Sumner fell to the floor senseless and bleeding,unable to extricate himself from the desk wherehe was sitting, closely engaged. This assault, from the effects of which Sumnernever fully recovered, kindled the North withflames of indignation and caused an intense ex-citement throughout the countr
