| Description | Stately arch to Icheri Shehar or Old Town quarter of Baku. The Old City or Inner City (Azerbaijani: İçərişəhər) is the historical core of Baku and is also the most ancient part of the city. Icheri Shehar or Old City is surrounded by walls and was pretty well protected. In 2007, the Old City had a population of about 3000. In December 2000, the Old City of Baku, including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower, became the first location in Azerbaijan to be classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, so in effect the old town quarter of Icheri Shehar which lies beyond those walls is actually an UNESCO World Heritage site.
