Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Located between the Pennsylvania State Capitol and the Susquehanna River, this street is home to many notable and impressive historic buildings, including the former Harrisburg Masonic Temple, the State Street Building, Grace United Methodist Church, St. Patrick Cathedral, St. Michael Lutheran Church, the former St. Lawrence Catholic Parish Church, and the J. Donald Cameron Mansion. Most of the street’s buildings, however, are two-to-four-story victorian buildings constructed as residential townhouses and apartment buildings, many of which have been adaptively reused as offices. Formerly, the view would have included the Dauphin County Veteran's Memorial Obelisk, which stood in the middle of the intersection of State Street and 2nd Street from 1866 until 1960, when it was relocated to uptown Harrisburg on the north side of the city in order to make way for wider vehicle lanes on Second Street, and owing to the removal of the original large landscaped median in the middle of State Street. The street creates a grand visual axis between the Susquehanna River and the Pennsylvania State Capitol, and is lined with an impressive collection of architecture. Most buildings on State Street, minus a few altered buildings and more modern infill buildings, are contributing structures in the Harrisburg Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
