Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, this block of buildings is dominated by the State Street Building, a 12-story Art Deco-style skyscraper designed by William Lynch Murray of Murray Associates Architects for the Payne-Shoemaker Company and built in 1937. The other buildings are low-rise structures older than the skyscraper, which feature various Classical Revival, Queen Anne, and Italianate-style elements, including masonry construction, double-hung windows, decorative cornices and parapets, oriel windows, and decorative trim. The largest of the low-rise buildings was once home to offices for The American Red Cross, and is a Classical Revival-style building with a stone exterior, six-over-six windows, a decorative cornice with triglyphs, and decorative spandrel panels featuring medical symbols. The buildings are contributing structures in the Harrisburg Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
