[edit]DescriptionStateLibQld 2 392533 Buildings at the penal settlement on St. Helena Island, 1913.jpg |
English: Buildings at the penal settlement on St. Helena Island, 1913.
The inset shows Superintendant James Ryan and Chief Warder Mr. Graham in the gardens. James Ryan is standing on the left of the ornate fountain. The main prison area and workshops were apparently surrounded by a high wooden stockade. An upward sloping pathway led to the superintendant's house. The building in the front right side was the southend of the cell block. The white railing fence on the side of the road ran nearly halfway to the jetty. (Description supplied with photograph.). |
