English: Photograph of C Company, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, 1st AIF at Salisbury Plain, England, 1916.
The Queensland Company was raised at the Brisbane Showgrounds, with recruits drawn from the main depot at Fraser's Camp. After training at Campbellfield in Victoria, the Battalion embarked on 6 June 1916 on HMAT Wandilla, which sailed via Durban and Capetown, reaching Devenport on 26 July. With the rest of the Division, they moved to Larkhill for three months' training on Salisbury Plain under their newly-appointed commander, Major-General John Monash. It is assumed that the formal photograph of the almost 200-strong Company was taken during this period. (Information taken from: M. B. B. Keatinge, War Book of the Third Pioneer Battalion, 1921). |
