Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Apollonian Vale, Gympie, ca. 1890
Gold was discovered in Gympie in 1867 by James Nash on the site now occupied by Gympie's Town Hall. Nash made the five-day journey down the Mary River from Maryborough and after digging up 75 ounces of gold in six days, he staked his claim and the Gympie gold rush was on. At the time Queensland was facing bankruptcy due to drought and a fall in wool prices. The resulting boost to the State's economy because of the Gympie gold rush enabled the colony to survive. Today some of Australia's largest gold producers are still operating in the area. The Gympie Eldorado Goldmine is the 8th greatest gold producing mine in Australia today.
