English: Hector Vasyli Memorial, Brisbane, 1918.
Memorial tablet to Hector Vasyli, 11 years old, who was accidentally killed while welcoming home returned soldiers on 9 June, 1918. Speakers at the unveiling of the tablet include Christy Freeleagus, President of the Hellenic Association, Lieut. Grant Hanlon, Alderman Peter Forrest (Mayor of South Brisbane), and Mr W. P. B. Miles of the Church of England Mission. Silken Greek and Australian flags were hung on either side of the tablet and were later given to the Hellenic Association to be hung over an enlarged photo of Hector. The tablet incorporates a white marble panel supported by Corinthian columns and a bronze medallion portrait of Hector against a background of grey slate, (Information taken from: Souvenir and addresses delivered by Mr. Christy Freeleagus, 1918, reprinted from an article appearing in the Protestants' sentinel, 13th Dec. 1918). |
