Description
English: Bardon in the 1930s

The photograph was taken from Lugg Street, Bardon, looking towards the Gap.

The suburb of Bardon was named after Bardon House, built by Joshua Jeays, an architect and a partner of Andrew Petrie in the construction of the Petrie Terrace Goal. Bardon House was named after Jeays' birthplace, Bardon Hill in Leicestershire, England. Joshua Jeays was an alderman of the first Municipality of Brisbane from 1859 to 1864, when he became the Mayor. The area that is now Bardon was first surveyed on 12 November, 1862. This was followed by the sale of the land, with only three buyers showing interest: Joshua Jeays, Francis Lyon and Edward Wyndham Tufnell. Tufnell became the first Anglican Bishop of Brisbane. Another person of influence to live in Bardon was Sir Charles Lilley, the editor of the Moreton Bay Courier and Premier of Queensland from 1868 to 1870.
