English: Crossing the bar into the Johnstone River at Innisfail, 1902
Thirty passengers placed in small lifeboat about two miles off entrance of Johnstone River. (S.S.Kuranda could not cross bar) Took 3 hours to travel 7 miles to {Geraldtown}. (Description supplied with photograph). Innisfail was named after the sugar plantation pioneered by Thomas Henry Fitzgerald (1824- 1888) sugar grower and politician. Known as Geraldton (from Fitzgerald) from ca.1880 to 1910, name was officially changed to avoid confusion with Geraldton in Western Australia. Innisfail is the ancient poetic name of Ireland.
