Charles Wallace Alexander Napier Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington, was born on 29 July 1860 in London, son of politician and author Alexander Baillie-Cochrane and his wife Annabella Mary Elizabeth, née Drummond, granddaughter of the Duke of Rutland. In 1886 he was elected to the House of Commons. The death of his father in February 1890 removed him to the House of Lords. On 13 June 1895 he married Mary Houghton Hozier.Lamington served as governor of Queensland from 9 April 1896 to 19 December 1901, then as governor of Bombay, India, in 1903-07. They had two children. Baron and Lady Lamington are pictured enjoying the company of two birds, possibly cockatoos, in the front yard of their home, Government House, Brisbane. |
