English: 5,867 GRT passenger liner Dumbéa leaving La Joliette, Marseille, France. She was built in 1889 at La Seyne-sur-Mer, Provence as Brésil for service between France and South America. In 1903 she was renamed 'Dumbea' and transferred to service between France, Australia and the Far East. In WW1 she served as a troop ship in the Dardanelles campaign and later in the evacuation of the Serbian army. On 10 September 1919 she capsized while being floated out of a dry dock at Marseilles. She was scrapped in 1928. (From description supplied with photograph). |
