English: Lord Lamington addresses Federation Day crowds, Brisbane, 1901
Lord Lamington reads the Proclamation of Commonwealth from a balcony of the Treasury building. Crowds are gathered below in William Street to hear him and watch the Federation Day procession passing by. The view is from William Street, near the corner of Queen Street, with the Treasury building on the right. The Treasury is decorated with palms and flags with spectators visible on the balconies. The soldiers, standing at attention with rifles at their side in the foreground of the photograph, are wearing white jackets and white helmets. A photographer can be seen at work, in the centre left of the shot, standing on the back of a cart. Many in the crowd are wearing boater hats while one gentleman standing in the immediate foreground next to two ladies is wearing a top hat. |
