[edit]DescriptionStateLibQld 1 111312 Two men lead a horsedrawn tram across a bridge at Hambledon.jpg |
English: Two men lead a horsedrawn tram across a bridge at Hambledon. Front view of two South Sea Islanders leading a horsedrawn tram across the wooden bridge at Skeleton Creek, Hambledon, ca. 1891. The tram tracks are visible in the foreground. Dense foliage and trees surround the bridge. The tramway from Trinity Inlet to the Hambledon Sugar Mill was erected by the mill owners Swallow and Derham. This horse-drawn tramway ceased to exist after the Cairns-Mulgrave Tramway was constructed in 1897-1898. The bridge shown is across Skeleton Creek, which reached Trinity Inlet six miles from the sea. Thomas H. Swallow took up Hambledon in October, 1881, and by 1888 over 900 acres were planted with sugar cane and 176 workers were employed (Description supplied with photograph). |
