Summary

[edit]

This graph shows the energy eigenvalues of Stark shifts in hydrogen, as a function of electric field strength. Magnetic quantum number: |m| = 1, parabolic quantum number: (n1 − n2) = -n+2, -n+4... , n-4, n-2; states with higher principle quantum number n experience a greater energy shift for a given electric field strength.

For large field strengths, energy eigenvalues do not actually cross; rather, the solutions are given by the Mathieu functions.
