[edit]
Description

B-17 ’237949’ was operated by the 730th Bomb Sqn, part of the 452nd Bomb Group based at Deopham Green, Norfolk. She was coded ‘6K-Q’ and named ‘Sunrise Serenade’. On 1st May 1944 she was shot down on a mission to Metz, France and crashed 7 miles NW of Brussels. The pilot, Lieutenant Francis C. Smedley, was killed bailing out but all other crew members survived with most becoming PoWs. The remains were recovered by the Belgian Aviation Historical Association (BAHA) in 2001, with two of the original crew present along with local people who witnessed the crash. Some parts, including this undercarriage leg, are on display at what is known as the Brussels Air Museum, although it is actually the Air and Space Section of the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History. Brussels, Belgium.
